Madill house community centre, was donated in 1914 by the Madill family for the community of Tuakau to use as Library, community hall, sports grounds, Bowling club, croquet club, and for the enjoyment of the community. The trust deed in place is managed by Tuakau Rotary club members as trustees, and the land and buildings can never be sold under the terms of the original 1914 Trust deed.
In 1924 Tuakau Bowling club proceded with development of a bowling greens and club room extensions, and the grand opening was 1927as per the plaque on the wall. From 1927 to 2012 it operated only as a bowling club and part of the land [ 3 metres wide] is still owned by Tuakau Bowling club Inc club. Over the years extensions and alterations were made to the buildings to make it suitable for the intended use, the most recent being the toilet block with showers completed in 2011/2012.
The Tuakau bowling went into recess due to old age of members in 2011 and the premises were largely unused. Tuakau Rotary took over management under a contract for 20 years in 2013 to return the premises and grounds to the use of the community of Tuakau, and pay off debts. The Tuakau Bowling Club Inc still exists with a revived small group of members who use the location for practice and are helping Tuakau Rotary development of the bowling grounds back to expectation.
Tuakau Rotary members and the community undertook extensive cleaning , painting, refurbishing, repairs, maintenance, and with the help of donations of carpets, vacuum cleaners, paint, toiletries , hygiene supplies, plumbing services, electrical services, locksmith services, lawn mowing, fence building, refridgerators, heaters, chairs, tables, bar servicing equipment and testing, and many hours of volunteer work have returned Madill house to the purposes of the original trust deed for the use of the community of Tuakau & districts as a hall for hire, grounds for sports, and much more.
The premises has full Building fire and safety certification, Food licence , Auckland City Health licence with evacuation schemes, and is tested for public safety monthly, 6 monthly and annually, The Waikato District Council regulations and licences are fully complied with.
Use of the premises is by donation, being for Community groups , and family events $150 per evening or day event. Mattrasses are available at $2.50 each per night we have a total of 20 mattrasses or $50 per night Children under 13 are free and childrens birthday parties for under 5 are only $100 for the day. Regular users can pay a monthly fee for use as agreed at time of booking. Donations are welcome and can be paid into the collection tin provided. All events, bookings are pre paid and direct credit can be made to the special donation account 060 469 0830458 00 with details of your reason for the donation, and charity status tax receipts will be issued. The hall has two rooms registered for 124 people, a kitchen, a full service bar and chillers, magnificent toilets and showers, easy to clean floors with equipment supplied, chairs, tables, cutlery, crockery, WIFI access, TV with access to Free view channels, DVD player, the two rooms can be separated by curtains, the grounds are available for full use for games and exercise, [ please consider our neighbours with noise] Storage is available for use of regular users inside the hall and in the garages.
Future development underway plans included the installation of a outdoor gym for community use, a revamp of the hangi pit area to add shade screens, gas Hangi, and tables and chairs, and the plans for the garages are to be converted into a Mens shed area for parents to teach their kids how to use tools and make things. The external fences will be replaced with wooden fences and planter boxes, more planting of trees, and development of the bowling greens, a Pitanque pitch, perhaps croquet, perhaps lawn tennis, and much more to make Madill house a community centre everyone enjoys and uses. Inside carpet will replace the existing flooring lino and equipment will be replaced.
No funding comes from WDC the centre is totally reliant on donations from hire, and managed by Friends of Madill community group for Tuakau Rotary club Madill committee, under agreement to Tuakau bowling club and Madill founding trust, and the current members of the Madill family , to develop the site and buildings from those funds and donations made.
